car donation to charity

Tips on Car Donation

Estimate the value of the car you want to donate to charity:

If your car is valued (fair market value) at less than $500, you don't need any extra paperwork except the receipt that you receive from the charity. You can check the market value for your car at Kelley's Blue Book.

Find a car donation organization with local or nationwide service:

There are many organizations that will arrange for a local towing company to come to your house and remove your car from your driveway. Be sure to call and ask about this.

Make sure there are no hidden costs:

Ask the charity if you have to pay anything for them to pick up your car. Do this before you make a commitment to donate your car.

Locate the title for your car donation:

If you have misplaced the original title to your car, you can contact the local Motor Vehicles Division to issue a replacement title.

Are you donating a vehicle other than a car?

Many charities will accept other types of vehicles other than cars. These include motorcycles, boats, RVs, motorhomes, and campers.

Obtain the necessary IRS form to claim your car donation tax deduction:

You may need to fill out IRS form 8283 for deductions greater than $500.
